Joy was a precious pastor’s wife who suddenly became a widow. She and I were in close contact until her phone was disconnected, and her birthday card was returned with her address changed to a P.O. box number. For three years, many attempts were made to find Joy, such as sending notes, cards and gifts to the P.O. box, and calling churches in the area. Most had never heard of her, and those who recognized the name had no idea what had become of her. I also checked the obituaries every few weeks. Everywhere I turned only led me to a dead end.
After three years of searching, I received a letter from a lawyer who informed me that he took care of the affairs of the elderly who have no family, and that Joy was one of his clients. Immediately I called the lawyer and learned that Joy was living in a nursing home with dementia. The very next day I went to see Joy. She had no idea who I was. I visited with Joy at least three days a week. Our time together was amazing. Joy often repeated her stories. We spent a lot of time laughing and crying together. I would read highlighted portions from her Bible, those verses that meant so much to her years ago. Often, we would attempt to make a joyful noise to the Lord (sing). I cherished my time with her. When Joy was moved to the second floor for hospice care, I knew our time together had ended. Three days later, Joy passed away.
Although I was so thankful to have had this time with Joy, my heart was broken. You see, Joy and her husband had no children and she was an only child. For three long years Joy sat alone in a nursing home with no visitors! This precious pastor’s wife, who had given her life in service to Christ and those she served in ministry, spent three years alone! She was living only ten miles from our home! No widowed pastor’s wife should ever have to live her remaining days, weeks, months or years as Joy did!
As a U.S. Missions Chaplain to the Widowed, I strive to ensure that not one widowed pastor’s wife ends up like our Joy!
How I Found My JOY
